Moving home and transferring your furniture to the new home is not as easy is it seems. You cannot just gather your stuff and move it all, there is much more to the process. You should not leave anything to the last minute as it not only leads to huge degrees of stress but can also cause financial havoc, unless plans are sorted out well before the last moment. This is one of the basic things people forget while moving and causes lots of trouble and hassle with the moving process. There are quite a lot of other things that have to be managed and duties that have to be fulfilled, so you have to make a checklist of things to do before moving home. Apart from just your personal belongings, you also have to ensure that your old house is thoroughly checked to ensure that nothing is left behind, big or small. Check for any pending bills, costs, etc. Let us look at a few things that you should do before you finally pack up to move out of your house.
Re-direct your mail: Who would want their confidential mail to get into someone else’s hands? Probably, no one! Therefore, it is a good idea to change your mailing address to your new address at least 3 months before your moving date. It may cost you to get your address shifted for every mail you have subscribed to, but it’s worth the amount considering the safety aspect.
Check for insurance: Make sure that your new house is fully insured. Go through your mortgage contract thoroughly to ensure every little detail is examined. It is good to put up an insurance policy at least a month before your move into your new house. Alternatively, you can move your existing insurance policy to your new address. You might need to make some amendments in your former policy and it’s much better to make changes in an existing policy than to make a new one.
Take meter readings: Billing departments often make mistakes when calculating what you need to pay, therefore on your last moments, you should note the final readings mentioned on your meters so that you have proof just in case you are being charged extra. Or here’s a better option. Instead of getting your billing accounts closed and opening fresh ones for your new house, you can simply request them to transfer the accounts to your new address!
Make arrangements for your children/pets: Children and pets cause unnecessary stress as they demand your constant care and attention. You obviously can’t keep an eye on your children and pets while packing, loading, and getting ready to move. You are already under so much stress with the moving process that it can get too much at times, so it’s better to keep small children and animals at bay, by arranging a baby sitter and a pet sitter for a day. Alternatively, you can also leave them at a relative’s place.
There is already a lot to be tense about on your last day at your old house. Make sure you know what to take care of and how to take care of it by making a checklist of things to do before moving home. If you fear missing out things, sit down with your family at least a few months before moving and prepare a checklist. If there’s anything you might want to add later, leave extra rows for additions. This way, you can keep crossing out the things which are complete, and in the end, make sure you have crossed out everything.
