Parents love to tuck their children into bed, read to them, spend some quality time with them and watch them fall asleep. However not all children respond in the same way when it comes to bedtime and it can become a real struggle getting your children to go to sleep. With all the exhaustion from the long days work, it’s probably very tough for you not to lose your temper and become angry at the situation. Furthermore, if children do not get enough sleep, it may lead to ailments such as underdeveloped minds, sickness, bad moods, it can affect their studies and other problems that arise later in life. Design a plan with mutual agreement: As children do not like to have the lights turned off, you should try using toy lights which have a faint glow. This will ensure that they are in a much calmer state of mind, making it easier to go to sleep. Gradually over time decrease the light settings and they will get use to a darker room.
Create a night-time journal: Every night before bed, give your child a few minutes so that they can describe their thoughts about the whole day by drawing or writing about it. This will calm their body and clear their brain. This will make them more relaxed and ensure they drift off.
Lights and gadgets: Natural as well as artificial sources of light force our minds to think we’re not tired, so an hour before it’s bedtime, reduce the brightness of lamps and lights, and turn off all electronic devices to give your body a break.
Play a game: Before going to bed, encourage your child to play a short game with you, possibly a one that could be played whilst lying down. For example, let them state 3 events from the day; 2 true and 1 fake, and then try to cross out the fake one. There are hundreds of such ideas you can come up with!
Goodnight talk: Get an audio CD or a cassette for your child that concentrates on relaxation and deep-breathing, or even give them a comforting little speech of your own too, but make sure it lasts for no more than a few minutes!
Scary to silly: Children often get afraid because of their flexible minds and the thoughts they develop. Add some fun to their fears, like adding some polka dots to a dragon!
Stuffed animals: If children have something to hug, they are less likely to feel afraid of their night-time fears. What better could you get apart from a stuffed animal?
Stick to the plan: As a parent, it is your responsibility to help your child adjust to the new bedtime plan, so be sure that they follow them. Do not ignore the fact that you have a major role to play in this. This can enhance their cognitive abilities and improve their behaviour.
